Why choose goji berries?
Goji berries are also known as wolfberries, which derives its name from "wolf-
peach" i.e. the tomato - its larger botanical cousin. For at least 2000 years, goji
berries have grown wild in China and used in food recipes and traditional Chinese
medicine due to their high nutritional value. In fact, they are considered to be a “superfruit” because of
they are rich in a variety of nutrients and phytochemicals, such as:
•
essential and trace minerals, such as calcium, selenium, potassium, iron and zinc
•
18 kinds of amino acids
•
a range of vitamins, such as vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) and vitamin C
•
polysaccharides
•
monosaccharides
•
unsaturated fatty acids (including the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid)
•
carotenoids (including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin)
•
and a number of phenols associated with antioxidant activity.
Goji berries contain a very high concentration of antioxidants, which play an important role in our bodies to
fight free radicals and maintain health. They also contain proteins, minerals and Omega oils, which are all
essential for good health. Their reputation as a superfood has triggered scientific research about their
potential health benefits, as well as systematic cultivation, commercialisation and now increasing export to
the West.

What are goji berries? Pronounced "go-gee”, Goji berries (sometimes called Chinese wolfberries, wolfberry fruit, mede berry, barbary matrimony vine, bocksdorn, Duke of
Argyll's tea tree, Murali, red medlar or matrimony vine and often mistakenly spelled “gogi”, “gogi berries” or “goji berrys”) are berries that are native to south eastern
Europe and Asia. They are actually part of the same plant family as potato, tomato, aubergine and chilli pepper.
Goji berries nutrition: Goji berries or wolfberries are generally considered to be a superfood or superfruit, because of their high nutritional value, antioxidant content and
various health benefits. They contain a variety of nutrients and phytochemicals including, essential and trace dietary minerals, amino acids, essential vitamins,
polysaccharides, monosaccharides, unsaturated fatty acids (including the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid), beta-sitosterol and other
phytosterols, carotenoids (including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin), lutein, lycopene, cryptoxanthin and a number of phenols associated with antioxidant properties.
Goji berries benefits / wolfberry benefits: These superfruit berries contain polysaccharides that have positive biological effects and numerous health benefits. For example,
goji berries have been said to help protect against cardiovascular disease, inflammatory diseases, eye diseases, (such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma),
cancer and immunomodulatory activity. It is also worth mentioning that a glucopyranoside and phenolic amides isolated from goji root bark have been shown to inhibit pathogenic
bacteria and fungi.
Goji berries are perfect as a healthy snack, particularly during pregnancy, because of their nutrient density. They provide vitamin C, vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), iron, zinc, selenium,
calcium and potassium. Ideally, if eating these as a snack, you would opt for organic goji berries, to avoid the toxic chemicals used in conventional farming methods.
