Why choose DIGESTIVEaid?
Digestive enzymes and the digestion of food
Food is composed of different elements, such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins
and minerals. These distinct elements often require different enzymes to break them
down into their separate constituent parts.
Digestion can start even before we put food into our mouths. The mere sight or odour
of food can trigger enzymatic activity, in anticipation of the food we are about to
receive.
Once digested, the body can then absorb these nutrients and transport them around the body, via the
bloodstream, to the various organs and cells that need them.
The digestion process is highly complex and can quite easily be disrupted by, for example, the use of
medication (and particularly antibiotics), a poor diet that is high in sugar, fat and/or refined carbohydrates,
ill-health, travel and stress. Similarly, certain foods, especially fats and proteins such as cheese, eggs, red
meats and beans, can be hard to digest.
In other words, both internal and external factors can place a strain on our digestive system, which is hard at
work all day, every day. Sometimes your gut may need a little help to support it in the work that it has to do.
DIGESTIVEaid provides a broad spectrum range of plant-derived digestive enzymes to help maintain
digestive function and the intestinal system. It contains culinary herbs that are well-known in their food
digestion actions. Ginger and peppermint, in particular, help to soothe the gut lining.

What do digestive enzymes do? Digestion begins in the mouth, where food is chewed, mixed with saliva and swallowed. The saliva contains enzymes that begin carbohydrate
digestion - amylase is one such enzyme. The stomach acts mainly to churn and store food. Its surface is covered by a thick, protective layer of mucus, helping to protect it from
damage caused by hydrochloric acid and enzymes. The hydrochloric acid lowers the pH, which helps to kill a lot of the bacteria that we ingest and also activates the protein-
digesting enzymes in our stomach. The small intestine is where digestion is completed and most absorption occurs here. The intestinal lining also produces digestive enzymes.
This is important because, if it is inflamed or ulcerated, these enzymes cannot be produced, so food will not be digested properly. Similarly, stress inhibits all enzyme secretion
and our production of hydrochloric acid declines as we get older. Many people routinely take antacids and other stomach blockers - such people will not be digesting protein
adequately and may experience abdominal bloating, reflux and burping. In the small intestine, bile from the liver, pancreatic juices and enzymes secreted by the intestinal
lining act to digest food. Stress and nutritional deficiencies can impair enzyme production. This can lead to bloating, flatulence and stomach cramps. If there is a lack of
digestive enzymes, partially digested food reaches the large intestine and can putrefy and ferment. The problem is compounded if there is a lack of fibre and water in the diet. If
you are constipated, or do not have a bowel movement every day, toxins inside your intestines are in contact with the intestinal wall for longer than desirable. This can increase
the risk of bowel cancer and also means that toxins will be absorbed through the bowel wall into your body, polluting it.
Digestive enzymes help you to ensure healthy bowel function. The way we digest our food has a great bearing on the amount of endotoxins generated within our digestive tract
and then absorbed into our body. Try to incorporate raw foods, fruit and vegetables (which are naturally high in beneficial enzymes) into your diet. The naturally-occuring
enzymes in fruit and vegetables are destroyed by heat. If most of the food you eat is cooked, your own body must work harder to produce these enzymes. You may require a
digestive enzyme supplement to help you digest your food more thoroughly and reduce bloating after meals. A good one would contain the enzymes amylase, protease, lipase and
cellulase.
How to aid digestion
Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar has been used as a digestive aid for many years. As people age, their bodies' ability to product natural digestive enzymes diminishes,
restricting digestion and sometime leading to digestive problems like flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain. Apple cider vinegar can be a beneficial natural digestive aid in
these circumstances.
Caraway seeds: Caraway has long been used as a natural digestive aid. It is even referred to as a digestive aid in the Ebers Papyrus, one of the worlds oldest surviving medical
documents in around 1500 BC. Caraway is one of the most effective natural digestive aids as a result of two chemicals in the seeds (carvole and carvene), which act to sooth the
smooth muscle tissue of the digestive tract and help expel gas. Caraway seeds are also known to be anti-spasmodic.
Chamomile: Chamomile is frequently used as a gentle treatment for gastrointestinal problems because of its anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory and carminative (gas-
relieving) properties. It relieves flatulence by soothing the mucous membrane of the digestive tract.
Fennel seed: Fennel is an aromatic and flavourful herb with both culinary and medicinal uses. It contains anethole (a type of aromatic compound that occurs widely in natural essential
oils), which can explain some of its medical effects. It also has carminative properties; in other words it prevents formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract or facilitates the expulsion
of that gas, thereby combating flatulence. It can also relax the intestines and reduce bloating caused by digestive disorders and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs).
Ginger root: As is the case with peppermint and chamomile, ginger is a carminative (relieves gas) and can relieve stomach bloating and abdominal pain. Ginger root can also
help to regulate sluggish digestion.
Peppermint: Peppermint contains menthol, a volatile substance that has an anti-spasmodic effect on the smooth muscle of the digestive tract. It helps to soothe nerves,
including a nervous stomach. The ability to soothe a cramping stomach and intestinal muscles makes it an effective natural digestive aid, which can help with indigestion,
heartburn, flatulence, stomach ache, bloating and symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - an intestinal disorder that causes stomach pain, bloating and
either diarrhea or constipation. Peppermint is known for its carminative (gas-relieving) herbal benefits.
Turmeric: Turmeric is a natural antibiotic, strengthens digestion and helps to encourage healthy intestinal flora (probiotics). It is effectively used to replenish and maintain the
friendly bacteria of the colon.
