Detoxification comes in numerous forms and programmes, the overarching aim of which is to eliminate
the poisons and toxins in our bodies that have built up over time.
Regrettably, in this modern day, a lot of our water and food carries chemical compounds which can be
extremely hazardous to our bodies. We are, at the same time, exposed to an ever-increasing amount of
environmental toxins - even the air we breathe consists of such substances.

Each and every toxin absorbed into
your body, whether swallowed,
drunk, inhaled or absorbed) will
wind up at the liver!
The liver is the body’s prime detoxification organ. Each and every toxin absorbed into your body
(regardless of whether swallowed, drunk, inhaled or assimilated into your skin) will wind up at the liver. But bear in mind, the liver is part of a
wider group of cleansing systems within the body and its task is to convert toxic substances into forms more easily excreted by the other organs
making up:
•
the digestive system - nutritional medicine places significant emphasis on the condition of our intestines and bowels in terms of the well-
being of our liver, lymphatic system and immune system;
•
the urinary system - the kidneys take delivery of toxins that have been broken down and made water soluble by the liver, for instance the
end products of medications, organic chemicals, yeast and hormones;
•
the lymphatic system - this system filters the our blood of toxins and waste products. Lymph nodes have huge amounts of white blood cells
that attack bacteria;
•
the respiratory system - gas exchange is the primary function of the lungs; inhaled oxygen is supplied to the blood and carbon dioxide is
exhaled. The respiratory system has a number of devices to scale back the level of poisons entering one's body. E.g. the hairs inside our nose
trap dust and pollutants, which are expelled when we blow it;
•
the skin - the skin is our largest organ of elimination and, if working at full capacity, is able to expel a significant amount of water soluble
toxic compounds. Sweat has a very close make up to urine and is an essential internal cleansing fluid, which is why exercise is so important
for good health.
As such, our bodies usually have the ability to manage the vast majority of toxic compounds to which they are routinely exposed. Then again, we can
run into problems if nutritional needs are not being met and/or the amount of contaminants becomes excessive. For instance, skin conditions such
as acne, eczema and psoriasis are sometimes treated by conventional medicine as illnesses of the skin itself, when in truth, they're more often
simply external indicators of internal toxicity. In these situations, a body cleanse and detox session may be helpful, along with complimentary
health supplements.
So how does a body cleanse and detox work?
The body was designed to make full use of natural products, including fruit, vegetables, herbs and phyto-chemicals from plants. Any foreign,
manufactured chemicals introduced into the body will likely cause some reaction from the immune system.
While there are many detoxification programmes around, they can vary quite a lot in their operation and benefits. Several deal with a particular
system of the body only, such as the digestive system (and the bowels in particular). Others may detoxify the liver, or the blood or attempt to
strengthen the function of the kidney or skin. A total body cleanse and detox programme, on the other hand, entails merging all of these detox
regimes, which can then help to re-establish the body’s organs to their optimum working capacity.
Virtually all detoxing regimes that involve a healthy change in lifestyle will have at least some advantageous effect. Even so there are, needless to
say, additional factors that need considering, such as a reasonable diet regime, taking regular exercise,
drinking pure water etc.
How body cleanse and detox programmes work ultimately depends on the specific programme being followed. For
instance, those centred on the digestive system will often propose a higher intake of natural, unprocessed plants
(such as living or raw foods, high in digestive enzymes). These types of food will contain the dietary fibre
essential for encouraging good bowel elimination. These foods will also commonly contain the essential amounts of
vitamins and trace minerals to supply the eliminative organs mentioned above.
