About the colon

The colon’s main role in digestion is to extract water and minerals from the waste materials travelling though it - a process which can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours.

Naturally-occurring beneficial bacteria in the colon also manufacture vitamins B1, B2, B12 and vitamin K, and help to prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. A healthy colon is therefore essential for efficient digestion, nutrient absorption and a strong immune system.

A fully-functioning colon will usually rid the body of waste two to three times per day, depending on the number of meals eaten. It will also carry out the vital function of promptly discharging harmful toxins and other waste materials from the body which, if allowed to remain, could give rise to a variety of digestive complaints and other health problems.

Cells of the colon secrete mucous which lubricates and protects its walls. Inflammation or irritation of the intestinal wall (e.g. as a result of poor diet, food allergy or sensitivity, or illness) can cause the release of large amounts of mucous, as well as water and electrolytes. In this case, there may be diarrhoea.

On the other hand, if the bowels are sluggish and waste-matter remains in the colon for longer than is desirable, causing constipation, large amounts of toxins can be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. This is called auto-intoxication or self-poisoning. Digestive regularity and a fast transit time are therefore essential for a healthy body.

About the ingredients in COL-Clear A

Turkey rhubarb, technically referred to as Rheum palmatum, is also commonly known as Turkish rhubarb, Chinese rhubarb, Indian rhubarb, Russian rhubarb and rhubarb root. Within Chinese herbal medicine, it is called da-huang. It is a highly regarded herb that is widely used as part of colon cleansing programmes, particularly by colonic hydrotherapists and clinics, because it contains the following active ingredients: anthraquinones, emodin, tannins, flavonoids (including rutin) and several polyphenols.

Barberry, also known as berberis vulgaris, mountain grape, pepperidge, berberry and the common grape, is a species of deciduous and evergreen shrub native to the temperate and sub-tropical regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. This herb is a natural helper for digestive complaints. The active ingredients in barberry are the isoquinolone alkaloids, particularly berberine.

Burdock root

Burdock, also known as beggar's button and technically as Arctium lappa, is one of the most potent tonics of herbalism. It contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, including fatty acids, organic acids, phenolic acids, lignans, sesquiterpenes, tannin, mucilage and inulin (a prebiotic), along with iron, sulphur and B-vitamins.

This “hot” herb is also known as Capsium frutescens, the Guinea spice, cow-horn pepper, aleva, bird pepper and red pepper. It is a chilli pepper that is red in colour and is traditionally used to spice dishes. Rich in vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium and manganese, this spice is nutritious. More importantly, it contains the active ingredient capsaicin, which may support healthy blood flow (and therefore natural detox) within the body, as well as a healthy metabolism.

Ginger root

Ginger, technically referred to as zinigiber officianale and called giang jiang in its native Asia, is a tropical plant. It is a staple component of Asian and Middle Eastern cooking, popular for its hot and spicy flavour. For centuries it has been a popular ingredient in natural herbal remedies to support a healthy gastrointestinal tract. Gingerol, a compound in ginger, is also a powerful antioxidant.

Fennel seed

Fennel, technically referred to as Foeniculum vulgare, is a hardy, perennial and umbelliferous herb, with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. Traditionally used as a culinary herb because of its aroma and anise-type flavour, it has also become a popular component of colon cleansing programmes because it is believed to support the body’s natural elimination of excess waste and toxins from the colon and to support a healthy acid/alkaline balance.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis and others) is a spiky, cactus-like plant of the lily family, best known for its soothing and calming properties. The gel is present under the outer surface of the leaf. As well as containing 18 amino acids and vitamins (it is a vitamin B12 precursor), it may also support a lower toxic load, act as an antioxidant and support intestinal integrity and natural cleansing.

Clove bud

Cloves are a fragrant spice, with oil being distilled from the buds. Its active constituents include a heavy volatile oil, a camphor resin, flavonoids and sterols.

Dandelion root

Dandelion, technically referred to as T. officinale and T. erythrospermum (the two species), is native to Eurasia and North America. It is traditionally thought of as a weed, but to herbalists, naturopaths and other alternative medicine practitioners, it is considered to be a nutritious and valuable herb. A rich source of vitamin A, B complex vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin D, as well as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc, it has traditionally been used to support healthy fluid balance in the body and as a natural helper for the stomach and digestive system. It is also thought to provide support for the liver and gallbladder.
